Good to know
5 districts, tens of thousands of stalls. Use YiwuGo app + offline map to navigate.
Alipay / WeChat Pay only. Credit cards rarely accepted; come prepared.
Retail samples available. One-piece buying OK, but check if prices are per-unit or per-box.
HSR from Hangzhou ~40 min. Yiwu Station; Districts 1–3 are the main wholesale zones.
Most first-time visitors step off the high-speed train expecting a very large shopping center. Standing in front of Yiwu International Trade City (义乌国际商贸城) for the first time makes the scale of that miscalculation immediately clear.

At a Glance:
🎄 This is where Christmas comes from. Over 60% of the world's Christmas decorations originate in Yiwu. The "Eternal Christmas Zone" on District 1's upper floors operates year-round — artificial pines, animatronic Santas, and ornaments in every theme imaginable.
Is Yiwu International Trade City right for you?
If the second column describes you better, Hangzhou's Hefang Street (河坊街) or Shanghai's Xintiandi (新天地) offer far more comfortable alternatives. Yiwu rewards the adventurous.

| Time | Notes | |
|---|---|---|
| 09:30 | 🌅 Optimal Arrival | Clear corridors, fresh vendor energy |
| 10:00–12:30 | 💪 Morning Prime | Peak mental sharpness — tackle bargaining now |
| 13:30–15:30 | 🛒 Afternoon | Complete remaining target categories |

Best days are weekdays (highest booth occupancy). Best months: March–May and September–November. Weekends see partial closures in Districts 2–3.
Reality Check: The Market Will Defeat the Unprepared
Yiwu is physically larger than it appears on any map. 5.5 million m² of trading floor, 15,000–25,000 steps on concrete, 6.5 productive hours before vendors close. Twenty minutes of preparation can double your efficiency.
Stalls don't accept credit cards. Cash is inconvenient. Set up before arrival.
❌ No payment = No purchases
20–40L, sturdy wheels. Carry bags exhaust you before noon. Non-negotiable equipment.
⚠️ Forget it = Buy one on arrival

Chinese New Year: The One Major Closure
The market's only significant annual shutdown happens around Chinese New Year. All five districts close for roughly two weeks and reopen simultaneously. Always verify with official Yiwu Commercial City Group announcements before traveling in late January through mid-February.

一区 · 340,000 m²
Toys, artificial flowers, jewelry, hair accessories. Eternal Christmas Zone on upper floors. Most visually spectacular.
🎯 If you only have half a day, start here

三区 · 460,000 m²
Notebooks, pens, washi tape, stamps, craft knives. Sports equipment and eyewear. Cosmetics (high minimums).
🎯 For dedicated journaling enthusiasts

五区 · 640,000 m²
Imported goods from 100+ countries. Fixed prices, no negotiation. Middle Eastern sweets, African crafts, ASEAN foods.
🎯 Perfect for bargaining fatigue
600,000 m² · Hardware, bags, umbrellas, small electronics. Quality suitcases ¥80–200 — your emergency overflow solution.
1.08 million m² · "The Sock Phenomenon" — 12 pairs ¥15–30. Gloves, scarves, hats, textiles, kitchenware. Floor 5 tourist center.
Navigation Inside a District
Each booth has a coordinate: H2-178 means Corridor H, Floor 2, Booth 178. Color-coded bilingual signs point to product zones, elevators, restrooms, and exits. Stick to 6–8 meter wide main aisles for browsing.
In 2026, thousands of vendors actively welcome individual purchases
Red/gold background — explicit retail policy
"Minimum order: 1 piece"
Sample clearance bins — maximum discount
The "Buy a Sample" Approach
For stalls without retail signage, one phrase works far better than anything else:
"我想买个样品。"
"I want to buy a sample."
In wholesale culture, "sample" (样品) is a legitimate commercial category. Acceptance rates are significantly higher than simply asking to buy one.
The Price-Per-Unit Trap
Many displayed prices refer to carton quantities, not individual units. A "¥15" label may mean ¥15 per dozen, or ¥15 for a box of 48.
Always confirm: 这是一个的钱,还是一箱的钱? (Is this per piece or per box?)

You don't need Chinese to bargain effectively. The entire complex runs on a shared interface: the large desktop calculator sitting on every vendor's counter.
The ritual is simple: point, watch the vendor type a number, take the calculator, type your counter-offer. No words needed — just numbers passing back and forth until you shake hands or walk away.
Point at the item — vendors understand "How much?" in any language
Vendor types their opening price on the calculator
You take the calculator and type your counter — aim for 70–80% of their price
Calculator passes back and forth in silence for 3–4 rounds
Reach agreement, or say "我再看看" (wǒ zài kànkan — "I'll keep looking") and walk away
| Sticker Price | Realistic Discount |
|---|---|
| Under ¥50 | 10–20% |
| ¥50–200 | 15–25% |
| ¥200–500 | 20–30% |
| Over ¥500 | 25–35% |
Buying More Moves the Price
Ask "多买能便宜吗?" — "Cheaper if I buy more?" Even going from 1 to 3 pieces can get the per-unit price moving.

Christmas decorations
District 1, upper floors — Yiwu's absolute advantage
Fashion jewelry & accessories
District 1, Floor 2 — 1/5 to 1/3 of high-street prices
Stationery & craft materials
District 3 — underrated category
Socks, scarves, gloves
District 4 — 12 pairs ¥15–30, lightweight, packable
Global imported foods
District 5 — fixed prices, no haggling
Counterfeit branded goods
Legal risk at customs — fines or confiscation
Electronics
Inconsistent quality, no testing, minimal returns
Cosmetics (District 3)
High minimums, ingredient verification difficult
⏱️ Duration: ~6.5 productive hours (09:30–16:00). Compress or extend based on your energy and interests.
🎄 Toys, flowers, Christmas Zone. Best photography before 11:00. Compare across stalls before buying.
🧳 Quick pass-through — pick up rolling suitcase (¥80–200) if District 1 exceeded carrying capacity
🍔 McDonald's / Pizza Hut at District 1 entrance. Or taxi to 宾王商圈 for more variety.
🌍 Fixed prices, no negotiation. Global foods, African crafts, ASEAN products. Decompression shopping.
Do Not Walk to District 5
The distance is ~2.5 km through industrial zones. Take the free shuttle bus (免费接驳车) from District 1 main road. Frequency: 10–15 min. Journey: 8–12 min seated.
Two-Day Visitors: Day 1 — Districts 1 and 4; Day 2 — Districts 3 and 5, evening at Binwang Night Market.
DHL · UPS · FedEx · EMS
Full tracking, insurance. Best for high-value or fragile goods. Most expensive.
Hundreds in Yiwu
Consolidate goods, handle customs. Sea or air freight. Practical for larger volumes.
Domestic next-day
Ship to your departure hotel. Avoid carrying everything on the train.
Customs Warning: The Identical-Item Trap
Most countries classify large quantities of identical goods as commercial imports — not personal luggage. Traveling with 50–100 units of the same product triggers duty or confiscation.
Stay clear: Diversify SKUs (10 pieces × 10 designs, not 100 × 1). Distribute packaging. Keep receipts. Avoid counterfeits entirely.

Screenshot and show your phone screen to vendors. No speaking required.

Yiwu pairs naturally with Hangzhou (杭州) — 40 minutes by high-speed rail. West Lake, classical gardens, and Longjing tea culture make an ideal counterpoint.
