Good to know
Reserve gate + time slot ahead. Book in the "西安城墙景区" WeChat mini-program; scan the QR at the gate you picked. Passport details required.
Bring your passport on the day. You need it for the online booking flow and rental desks may ask again when you pick up a bike on the wall.
Plan bike deposit and return. Many stations still want ¥100 cash (some offer deposit-free Alipay/WeChat); return at any rental point before desks close (~21:00)—after ~20:00, South Gate area is usually safest.
Match your exit gate to closing time. Metro Line 2 Yongningmen (永宁门), Exit D, walks straight to South Gate (open until 22:00). East, West, North, and most other gates typically close at 20:00—descend before then or use a late-night gate.

Xi'an's City Wall (西安城墙) stretches 13.7 kilometers in a near-perfect rectangle around the old city — and you can cycle the entire thing in under two hours. Built in 1370 during the Ming Dynasty, this is the largest and most complete ancient city wall still standing in China. Where most "ancient walls" are fragments behind a fence, this one is a 12-meter-wide elevated highway paved with original grey bricks, open until 10 PM, with bike rental stations every few kilometers.
[图:城墙截面结构.jpg]
Xi'an City Wall (西安城墙) was built between 1370 and 1378 under the first Ming emperor, Zhu Yuanzhang. An important detail most guides miss: this is not a Tang Dynasty wall. Tang-era Chang'an was several times the size of today's walled rectangle. The Ming builders reused the foundations of the much smaller Tang Imperial City (皇城) — the administrative quarter — and expanded outward from there.
| Spec | Data |
|---|---|
| Perimeter | ~13.7 km |
| Height | 12 m |
| Top width | 12–14 m (room for four horse-drawn carriages side by side) |
| Base width | 15–18 m |
| Gates | 18 (4 original Ming gates + 14 added later) |
| Watchtowers | 98 |
| Built | 1370–1378 (Ming Dynasty) |
The top surface is wider than most visitors expect — not a narrow path but a 12-to-14-meter-wide elevated boulevard paved with grey bricks, smooth enough for comfortable cycling. You're not riding a boardwalk; you're riding an ancient military highway.
📍 Xi'an City Wall (South Gate) (Map | AMap)[图:瓮城俯瞰.jpg]
Xi'an's City Wall is more than a tall barrier. It's a complete cold-weapon-era defense system — every component has a military purpose, and understanding them turns a casual walk into a tactical tour.
[图:南门瓮城内部.jpg]
Each of the four main gates has a barbican (瓮城, wèngchéng) — a walled enclosure between the outer and inner gates. If attackers breached the outer gate, they'd find themselves trapped in this enclosed space with defenders raining arrows from all four elevated walls. The name literally comes from "catching a turtle in a jar" (瓮中捉鳖). The South Gate (永宁门) barbican is the best-preserved — you can look straight down into its kill zone from the wall top.
[图:南门箭楼正面.jpg]
Each main gate has two key structures: the arrow tower (箭楼) faces outward, bristling with arrow slits — the South Gate arrow tower alone has 48 on its front face plus dozens more on the sides. Behind it, the gate tower (城楼) faces inward toward the city, serving as the command post.
[图:城墙敌楼.jpg]
Ninety-eight watchtowers are spaced exactly 120 meters apart along the entire wall. The spacing is deliberate: 120 meters equals two arrow ranges, so archers in adjacent towers could create overlapping fields of fire with no blind spots at the base. When cycling, each watchtower you pass marks roughly another 120 meters — a useful distance marker.
[图:城墙角楼.jpg]
The four corner towers sit on circular bases that protrude from the wall, giving defenders 270-degree coverage across two wall faces. The northeast corner tower is the best preserved and worth a deliberate stop. From here, the contrast between the low grey-tiled roofs of the old city inside the wall and the high-rise CBD outside is stark — this is the spot where the wall most visibly separates two centuries.
[图:护城河与城墙倒影.jpg]
A 14.6-kilometer moat encircles the entire wall. After a full renovation completed in early 2026, it's once again filled with water and open for boat cruises. Seeing the wall from water level — especially after the lights come on at dusk — is a completely different perspective from the top-down view. The tree-lined Huancheng Park runs alongside the moat and is where locals jog, practice tai chi, and walk their birds.
Each of the four original Ming gates has a distinct character. Which one you enter through shapes your entire experience.
[图:南门永宁门全景.jpg]
The grandest, busiest, and most culturally active gate. The plaza in front is one of Xi'an's signature landmarks. The barbican here is the best preserved on the wall — the overhead view from the ramparts is unmistakable. Downside: the biggest crowds, especially on holidays.
📍 Yongning Gate (South Gate) (Map | AMap)Cultural performances (South Gate only):
| Performance | Schedule | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior Changing of Guard | Daily 10:00 & 15:00 | Free to watch, South Gate plaza |
| Warrior Patrol | Daily from morning, irregular | Wall-top patrol near South Gate, photo-friendly |
| "Dream of Chang'an" Welcome Ceremony | Thu–Sun 20:30–21:00 | Large-scale live performance; tickets ¥260 (or ¥580 with wall admission) |
[图:东门长乐门.jpg]
Far fewer crowds than the South Gate, with an open square in front of the gate tower. Morning light hits this gate head-on, making it the top choice for Hanfu photo shoots. Several Hanfu rental shops (around ¥80–150 including hair and makeup) operate near the gate — dressing up in traditional costume for photos on the ancient wall has become a signature Xi'an experience.
📍 Changle Gate (East Gate) (Map | AMap)[图:西门安定门.jpg]
Historically the direction of the Silk Road. Quiet and uncrowded. After descending, the Muslim Quarter (北院门) is a 10-minute walk away — making this gate ideal for combining the wall with Xi'an's most famous food street in one half-day.
📍 Anding Gate (West Gate) (Map | AMap)[图:北门安远门.jpg]
Right next to Xi'an Railway Station, useful for a quick visit before catching a train. Looking south from the wall top gives you a panorama of the old city; looking north, the railway station and modern Xi'an. The least crowded gate.
📍 Anyuan Gate (North Gate) (Map | AMap)[图:城墙骑行者.jpg]
Cycling the full loop is the signature Xi'an City Wall experience and the way I recommend most visitors explore it. The ~13.7 km circuit takes 1.5–2 hours with photo stops, and moderate fitness is all you need.
| Bike type | Price | Time limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single bike | ¥45 | 3 hours | Most popular choice |
| Tandem bike | ¥90 | 3 hours | Good for couples or parent-child |
| Battery car (guided) | ¥80/person | ~50 min | For those who prefer not to pedal |
Rental rules:
Go counterclockwise (east from South Gate)
Starting from South Gate and heading east gives you:
[图:城墙骑行路面.jpg]
Surface Warning
Most sections are smooth grey brick, comfortable for cycling. But parts of the north and west walls have wider gaps between bricks and mild bumps. Tandem bikes feel this more due to their longer wheelbase.
| Mode | Duration | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cycling (full loop) | 1.5–2 hours | ¥45–90 | Most adults and teens with normal fitness |
| Walking (half loop) | 2–3 hours | Free | Slow explorers; the South Gate → Hanguang Gate → Wenchang Gate stretch is the most scenic |
| Battery car (full loop) | ~50 min | ¥80/person | Seniors, young children, limited mobility |
| Walking (full loop) | 4–5 hours | Free | Serious walkers with good stamina |
[图:城墙日落金色光线.jpg]
Watching the sunset from the wall top is one of Xi'an's best free experiences. With no obstructions and 360-degree views, the entire wall turns golden as the sun drops behind the West Gate.
Best strategy:
[图:城墙夜景灯光.jpg]
After dark, warm-toned lights trace the outlines of every gate tower, arrow tower, and corner tower — from the wall top, it looks like a glowing line stretching into the distance. The South Gate section has the best lighting effects. On Thursday through Sunday evenings, the "Dream of Chang'an" live ceremony (separate ticket required) adds another layer.
Night Cycling
Some wall sections have limited lighting after dark. Use your phone flashlight if cycling at night. The wall stays open until 22:00 (last tickets at 21:30). You can exit 24 hours a day through Yongning Gate (north exit), Changle Gate, Anding Gate, Anyuan Gate, or Zhongshan Gate.
| Type | Price | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| Adult full price | ¥54 | Standard admission |
| Half price | ¥27 | Students (with student ID) — check on-site for current concession list |
| Free | ¥0 | Children under 1.2 m; other concessions per on-site policy |
| Combo: Wall + Stele Forest Museum | ¥120 | Saves vs buying separately |
How to book: Reserve through the "西安城墙景区" (Xi'an City Wall) WeChat mini-program. Select your entry gate and time slot, enter passport details, and scan the QR code at the gate.
| Gate | Hours |
|---|---|
| South Gate / Zhongshan Gate / Jianguo Gate | 8:00–22:00 |
| East / West / North / Hanguang / Wenchang and other gates | 8:00–20:00 (seasonal adjustment) |
| Bike rental | ~8:00–21:00 (returns only after 21:00) |
| 24-hour exits | Yongning (north exit), Changle, Anding, Anyuan, Zhongshan |
| Season | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | ★★★★★ | Ideal temperatures, cherry blossoms and willows along the moat |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | ★★★★★ | Crisp air, golden light, perfect for photography |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | ★★★ | The wall top has zero shade — 40°C+ exposed brick. If visiting in summer, ascend after 17:00 |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | ★★★ | Windy but crowd-free. Bring a windproof jacket. Snow-covered walls are stunning, but sections may close temporarily |
Summer Heat Warning
The wall top is a fully exposed surface with no trees, no awnings, and no escape from the sun. In July and August, surface temperatures can exceed 50°C. Bring hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and at least 2 liters of water — or simply visit after 5 PM for the sunset experience.
[图:含光门遗址博物馆.jpg]
Most visitors don't realize there's a museum inside the wall itself. The Hanguang Gate Heritage Museum (含光门遗址博物馆) sits at the southwest section of the wall and displays the excavated remains of a Sui-Tang Dynasty gate found within the wall's cross-section. You can see the wall's "anatomy" — outer Ming-era bricks encasing Tang Dynasty rammed earth layers from over 1,400 years ago. This is the most vivid proof that the Ming wall was built on Tang Imperial City foundations.
Included in the ¥54 wall ticket — no extra charge. Enter through Hanguang Gate to access both the museum and the wall top.

Hanfu rental shops near the East and South gates charge around ¥80–150 including hair styling and makeup. Dressing in traditional Chinese costume and posing against the grey bricks, red lanterns, and ancient gate towers has become one of Xi'an's defining tourist rituals. Morning light (9–10 AM) works best at the East Gate, where the sun hits the facade head-on.
If you want to see how Xi'an residents actually relate to the wall, visit Huancheng Park. This green belt runs alongside the moat around the entire perimeter. At dawn: tai chi, jogging, birdcage walks. At dusk: square dancing, strolling couples, retired men playing chess. This is the least "touristy" and most lived-in wall experience.
The Xi'an City Wall International Marathon (西安城墙国际马拉松) has been held regularly in autumn — the world's only marathon run on top of an ancient city wall. The course follows the full ~13.7 km wall-top loop. Check current-year event listings if you're interested in running it.
| Location | What to shoot | Best time |
|---|---|---|
| Northeast corner tower | Wall vanishing line + city skyline | Golden hour |
| Above South Gate arrow tower | Bird's-eye view into the barbican | Any time |
| Southwest wall section | Sunset + Big Wild Goose Pagoda silhouette | 30 min before sunset |
| Moat bank (outside South Gate) | Water reflection + full wall panorama | After lights on |
| East Gate tower | Hanfu portraits against ancient architecture | 9–10 AM |
[图:护城河夜游船.jpg]
Boat cruises depart from the moat dock near the South Gate, taking roughly 30–40 minutes along the southern section. Seeing the illuminated wall from water level is a completely different experience — reflections of corner towers and arrow towers ripple across the surface. Tickets are approximately ¥50/person (wall admission not included).
Metro (recommended):
Taxi phrase — show your driver:
| English | Chinese | Pinyin | Say It Like… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Please take me to the South Gate City Wall entrance | 请带我去南门城墙入口 | Qǐng dài wǒ qù nánmén chéngqiáng rùkǒu | Ching dai woh choo nan-men chung-chee-ang roo-koh |
| Please stop here | 请在这里停车 | Qǐng zài zhèlǐ tíngchē | Ching zai juh-lee ting-chuh |
The wall's central location is the geographic heart of Xi'an sightseeing — several top attractions are within walking distance after you descend.
[图:回民街美食街.jpg]
10–15 minutes on foot from the West or South Gate. Xi'an's most famous food district: 羊肉泡馍 (lamb paomo), 肉夹馍 (Chinese "hamburger"), 凉皮 (cold noodles), biángbiáng面 (belt-wide noodles), lamb skewers — enough variety for an entire day of eating. Plan this as your post-wall lunch or dinner.
📍 Muslim Quarter (Map | AMap)[图:钟楼夜景.jpg]
15 minutes north on foot from the South Gate. The Bell Tower (钟楼) and Drum Tower (鼓楼) stand about 200 meters apart and form Xi'an's iconic landmark pair. The Drum Tower sits right at the entrance to the Muslim Quarter.
📍 Xi'an Bell Tower (Map | AMap)[图:碑林博物馆.jpg]
5 minutes on foot from the South or Wenchang Gate. The Stele Forest Museum (碑林博物馆) houses over 3,000 stone steles, including original rubbings from calligraphy masters like Yan Zhenqing and Liu Gongquan. Essential for anyone interested in Chinese calligraphy or carved-stone history. Admission ¥65, or ¥120 as a combo with the wall.
📍 Stele Forest Museum (Map | AMap)Right outside the South Gate. A pedestrian street of brush shops, calligraphy galleries, seal carving, and antique stores — quieter and more scholarly than the Muslim Quarter.
📍 Shuyuanmen Culture Street (Map | AMap)Half-day plan (recommended):
South Gate → cycle the full loop (1.5–2 hours) → descend at South or West Gate → Muslim Quarter for lunch/dinner → Bell & Drum Tower plaza stroll
Full-day plan:
Morning at Stele Forest Museum (1 hour) → enter wall at Wenchang Gate → cycle to South Gate and descend (2 hours) → Shuyuanmen Culture Street → Muslim Quarter lunch → Afternoon at Bell & Drum Towers → Return to South Gate for sunset and night views
A single bike takes about 1.5–2 hours with photo stops, or roughly 1 hour if you ride straight through. Tandem bikes are slightly slower.
