Huanglong (黄龙) spreads over 3,400 travertine pools across a mountain ridge between 3,000 and 3,600 meters — amber, jade-green, peacock-blue, shifting with the light and water level. Jiuzhaigou gets more fame, but Huanglong is the purer geological spectacle: no other place on Earth offers an entire valley of natural color palette. This guide covers ticket booking, cable car strategy, the best hiking route, and how to handle the altitude on this 4–5 hour high-elevation trek.
Huanglong Valley stretches about 7.5 km along a ridge of the Min Mountains, with the core scenic zone covering roughly 3.6 km of exposed travertine deposits — rising from about 3,000 m to 3,600 m in elevation. Snowmelt carrying dissolved calcium carbonate has built up over millennia into thousands of tiered natural pools. The official count exceeds 3,400. Pool color depends on water depth, mineral thickness on the basin floor, and the angle of sunlight: shallow pools glow gold, deeper ones turn sapphire-blue, and those in between shift between emerald, amber, and milky white.

Huanglong was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1992, recognized as "one of the most spectacular calcite landscapes on Earth." Unlike Jiuzhaigou — which combines water, forest, and waterfalls — Huanglong's star is singular: the travertine pools themselves. The entire formation looks like a golden dragon winding up the mountain ridge, which is where the name "Huanglong" (Yellow Dragon) comes from.
At the very top sits the Five-Color Pond (五彩池) at 3,576 m — the destination every trail leads to, and one of the most photographed natural scenes in China.
Huanglong is a day trip only — you arrive from Jiuzhaigou, Chuanzhusi, or Songpan, hike 4–5 hours, and return the same day.

Huanglong sits in Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan. The nearest airport is Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (also called Chuanzhusi Airport); the nearest town is Songpan.
The drive from Jiuzhaigou Valley entrance to Huanglong is about 100 km, taking 2–2.5 hours.
A sightseeing bus (¥15 one way / ¥20 round trip) runs from the park entrance to the cable car lower station. From the cable car upper station, another sightseeing bus (2.4 km, ~10 minutes) takes you closer to the Five-Color Pond. Sightseeing bus tickets are capped at ~6,000 per day — book in advance via the 美丽阿坝 (Beautiful Aba) app during peak season.
| Season | Price | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| Peak | ¥170 | Jun 1 – Dec 15 |
| Off-season | ¥60 | Dec 16 – May 31 |
Discount policies:
Important: Tickets must be booked in advance through the 美丽阿坝 APP or the Aba tourism website (real-name registration required). Daily visitor cap: 25,000. For peak dates (Golden Week, summer weekends), book 3–7 days ahead.

Operating hours: Opens at 7:30 AM; last ticket sale at 16:30. Last uphill ride at 17:00, last downhill ride at 17:30.
The cable car shuts down from December 16 through March 31. Winter visitors must walk the entire trail — a strenuous proposition at this altitude with minimal water in the pools. Not recommended for most travelers.
| Period | Hours |
|---|---|
| Peak season (Jun 1 – Oct 31) | 8:00–18:00 |
| Transition (Nov 2 – Dec 15) | 8:30–17:30 |
| Winter (Dec 16 – May 31) | 9:00–17:30 |
Sightseeing bus operates 8:00–17:00.
Huanglong has one main trail, but how you combine the cable car and walking makes a big difference in effort and experience.
Cable car up → walk to Five-Color Pond → walk down the full trail. Total time: roughly 4–5 hours.

The crown of Huanglong. 693 travertine pools spread across a summit plateau at 3,576 m, covering about 21,000 square meters. Colors range from gold to sapphire-blue, emerald-green to milky white, depending on water depth, mineral deposits, and sunlight angle. Clear midday sun (11:00–14:00) produces the most saturated colors; overcast skies shift the palette to muted grey-green.

From the upper viewing platform, the 693 pools look like a tray of spilled jewels — this is the image on every magazine cover and travel brochure. Spend at least 30 minutes here.
📍 (Google | Amap)About 500 meters below the Five-Color Pond. Over 500 pools of varying sizes scattered across a 100-meter-wide calcite slope — crescents, footprints, chains. Less concentrated than the Five-Color Pond, but the shapes are more diverse.
[图:黄龙争艳池景观.jpg]
The most distinctive stretch on the descent: low shrubs and moss grow inside the shallow pools, each one resembling a natural miniature bonsai garden. The water is pale, the scale is small, and the compositions are photogenic.

A cluster of larger, calmer pools that reflect the surrounding snow peaks and blue sky in perfect symmetry when there is no wind. Best shooting window: 9:00–11:00 AM, when wind is lightest.
A small Taoist temple near the Five-Color Pond at 3,558 m, dating to the Ming Dynasty. It honors the Yellow Dragon Immortal. The temple itself is modest, but its altitude alone makes it a curiosity. A local temple fair is held on the 15th of the sixth lunar month each year.
Huanglong's appearance is highly dependent on water level and light. Visit at the wrong time and you will see dry white calcite flats instead of shimmering color.
| Period | Water | Color | Weather | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jun–Aug | ★★★★★ | ★★★★ | Rainy spells, sometimes overcast | ★★★★ |
| Sep–Oct | ★★★★ | ★★★★★ | Mostly clear, autumn foliage | ★★★★★ (best) |
| Nov | ★★★ | ★★★ | Early snow, some pools ice over | ★★★ |
| Dec–May | ★ | ★ | Cold, cable car closed, very low water | ★ (skip) |
September–October is the golden window: the rainy season has just ended, pools are full but not turbid, and red-gold autumn foliage creates extreme contrast with blue-green water. This is also peak tourism season — avoid October 1–7 (Golden Week) when crowds are at their worst.

Light conditions matter: midday sun from 11:00–14:00 produces the most vivid pool colors (direct sunlight reflecting off the mineral deposits). Overcast or post-rain light turns the palette grey-green with lower contrast. If you catch the moment just after rain clears to sunshine — that is the most magical.
The Five-Color Pond sits at 3,576 m and the trailhead at roughly 3,000 m. That is 500–1,000 meters higher than Jiuzhaigou (where most boardwalks are at 2,000–2,500 m, topping out around 3,100 m) — and you are walking continuously for 4–5 hours at this elevation. Altitude sickness is a real and common issue at Huanglong.
Mild: headache, shortness of breath, light nausea — most visitors experience this at Huanglong. Usually manageable with slower pace and oxygen. Severe (rare): intense headache, vomiting, confusion — stop all activity, use oxygen immediately, descend with a companion, and seek the on-site medical station.
Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou are about 100 km apart, and nearly every traveler pairs them. Since Huanglong has no accommodation, you must return to base the same day.
Even in July–August, the summit (3,600 m) can drop to 5–10°C. Bring a lightweight down or fleece jacket, a windproof shell, and sturdy walking shoes (the boardwalk is wet and slippery in places). Rain gear is essential — mountain weather changes fast.
Only a few vendors operate inside the park: bottled water costs ¥10, instant noodles ¥15–20. Bring your own lunch, energy bars, and at least 1 liter of water. There are a few restaurants outside the entrance, but options are limited.
The park entrance has a luggage storage facility. Do not attempt the hike with a large backpack — go light.
The downhill cable car (¥40) is a reasonable option if your knees are bad or your energy is spent. But it means skipping the lower-half sights — Bonsai Pond, Mirror Reflection Pool, and Welcome Guest Pool are only accessible on the walking trail. Unless you are feeling unwell, walking down gives the fuller experience.
Yes, and almost everyone does. The two are about 100 km apart. A classic plan is 3 days: 1 day for Jiuzhaigou, 1 day for Huanglong, and 1 day for travel. See the Combining section above for detailed itinerary options.
Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou are just the headline act in western Sichuan — the region also holds Tibetan grasslands, ancient towns, and some of China's most dramatic mountain scenery. If you are mapping out a wider Sichuan route that threads together the best stops without doubling back, a tailored plan can cut transit time and avoid peak-crowd bottlenecks.
