Huanglong (黄龙) spreads over 3,400 travertine pools across a mountain ridge between 3,000 and 3,600 meters — amber, jade-green, peacock-blue, shifting with the light and water level. Jiuzhaigou gets more fame, but Huanglong is the purer geological spectacle: no other place on Earth offers an entire valley of natural color palette. This guide covers ticket booking, cable car strategy, the best hiking route, and how to handle the altitude on this 4–5 hour high-elevation trek.

3,400 Terraced Pools on a Mountain Spine

Huanglong Valley stretches about 7.5 km along a ridge of the Min Mountains, with the core scenic zone covering roughly 3.6 km of exposed travertine deposits — rising from about 3,000 m to 3,600 m in elevation. Snowmelt carrying dissolved calcium carbonate has built up over millennia into thousands of tiered natural pools. The official count exceeds 3,400. Pool color depends on water depth, mineral thickness on the basin floor, and the angle of sunlight: shallow pools glow gold, deeper ones turn sapphire-blue, and those in between shift between emerald, amber, and milky white.

[图:黄龙五彩池全景鸟瞰.jpg]

Huanglong was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 1992, recognized as "one of the most spectacular calcite landscapes on Earth." Unlike Jiuzhaigou — which combines water, forest, and waterfalls — Huanglong's star is singular: the travertine pools themselves. The entire formation looks like a golden dragon winding up the mountain ridge, which is where the name "Huanglong" (Yellow Dragon) comes from.

At the very top sits the Five-Color Pond (五彩池) at 3,576 m — the destination every trail leads to, and one of the most photographed natural scenes in China.

Huanglong is a day trip only — you arrive from Jiuzhaigou, Chuanzhusi, or Songpan, hike 4–5 hours, and return the same day.

Getting to Huanglong

Huanglong sits in Songpan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan. The nearest airport is Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (also called Chuanzhusi Airport); the nearest town is Songpan.

From Chengdu

  • By high-speed train (recommended): Chengdu East → Huanglong Jiuzhai Station (黄龙九寨站) or Songpan Station, about 1 hour 40 minutes. From the station, a scenic-area shuttle bus (¥28, ~50 min) goes directly to Huanglong. Book shuttle tickets via the "九旅悦行" mini-program.
  • By air: Fly from Chengdu Shuangliu or Tianfu to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (~1 hour, ¥500–1,500 depending on season). The airport sits at roughly 3,400 m — you step off the plane into high altitude immediately. Shuttle buses to Huanglong cost about ¥22; taxis or chartered cars run ¥100–150 for the 50 km, ~1 hour drive.
  • By bus: Chadianzi Bus Station (茶店子客运站) in Chengdu to Songpan, 6–8 hours, roughly ¥100–150. From Songpan to Huanglong is about 56 km by taxi or chartered car (¥50–100, ~40 minutes).
  • Self-driving: Take the G213 or Jingkun Expressway via Wenchuan and Songpan, roughly 350 km, 6–7 hours. Roads are generally well-maintained but mountain sections have tight curves.

From Jiuzhaigou

The drive from Jiuzhaigou Valley entrance to Huanglong is about 100 km, taking 2–2.5 hours.

  • Daily shuttle: A bus departs from the Jiuzhaigou bus station around 7:40 AM, arriving at Huanglong around 10:00 (with return at ~15:30). Fare is about ¥47 per person each way. In peak season, buy tickets a day ahead.
  • Chartered or shared car: About ¥300–500 one way (can include wait time). Hotels and travel agencies near Jiuzhaigou can arrange this easily.

Inside the Park

A sightseeing bus (¥15 one way / ¥20 round trip) runs from the park entrance to the cable car lower station. From the cable car upper station, another sightseeing bus (2.4 km, ~10 minutes) takes you closer to the Five-Color Pond. Sightseeing bus tickets are capped at ~6,000 per day — book in advance via the 美丽阿坝 (Beautiful Aba) app during peak season.

The Classic Route: Cable Car Up, Walk Down

Huanglong has one main trail, but how you combine the cable car and walking makes a big difference in effort and experience.

Recommended Strategy

Cable car up → walk to Five-Color Pond → walk down the full trail. Total time: roughly 4–5 hours.

  1. Park entrance → cable car lower station: Sightseeing bus (¥15, ~5 min) or walk 15 minutes.
  2. Cable car ride (¥80, ~8 minutes) to the upper station at roughly 3,470 m.
  3. Upper station → Wanglongping viewpoint: Walk about 20 minutes on mostly flat boardwalk through forest.
  4. Wanglongping → Five-Color Pond: Take the sightseeing bus (~10 min) or walk 30–40 minutes.
  5. Five-Color Pond (3,576 m): Spend 30–60 minutes here. The right-side boardwalk gives a sweeping bird's-eye panorama from above (go here first); the left-side boardwalk puts you at eye level with the pools.
  6. Walk down: From Five-Color Pond, descend the main boardwalk trail past Huanglong Ancient Temple → Competing Splendor Pools → Mirror Reflection Pool → Bonsai Pond → Welcome Guest Pool → park exit. Downhill takes about 2–2.5 hours.

[图:黄龙栈道沿途钙化池.jpg]

Why Cable Car Up + Walk Down

  • The uphill climb covers 500+ m of elevation gain — the cable car removes the hardest physical effort
  • Walking downhill lets you see every pool cluster in sequence from top to bottom
  • Starting from the Five-Color Pond means you see the most spectacular sight first, then enjoy the variety on the way down
  • Walking both ways takes 6–7 hours at altitude and is significantly more demanding — not advisable for most visitors

Key Sights Along the Trail

Five-Color Pond (五彩池)

The crown of Huanglong. 693 travertine pools spread across a summit plateau at 3,576 m, covering about 21,000 square meters. Colors range from gold to sapphire-blue, emerald-green to milky white, depending on water depth, mineral deposits, and sunlight angle. Clear midday sun (11:00–14:00) produces the most saturated colors; overcast skies shift the palette to muted grey-green.

[图:黄龙五彩池近景特写.jpg]

From the upper viewing platform, the 693 pools look like a tray of spilled jewels — this is the image on every magazine cover and travel brochure. Spend at least 30 minutes here.

📍 (Google | Amap)

Competing Splendor Pools (争艳池)

About 500 meters below the Five-Color Pond. Over 500 pools of varying sizes scattered across a 100-meter-wide calcite slope — crescents, footprints, chains. Less concentrated than the Five-Color Pond, but the shapes are more diverse.

[图:黄龙争艳池景观.jpg]

Bonsai Pond (盆景池)

The most distinctive stretch on the descent: low shrubs and moss grow inside the shallow pools, each one resembling a natural miniature bonsai garden. The water is pale, the scale is small, and the compositions are photogenic.

[图:黄龙盆景池特写.jpg]

Mirror Reflection Pool (明镜倒映池)

A cluster of larger, calmer pools that reflect the surrounding snow peaks and blue sky in perfect symmetry when there is no wind. Best shooting window: 9:00–11:00 AM, when wind is lightest.

Huanglong Ancient Temple (黄龙古寺)

A small Taoist temple near the Five-Color Pond at 3,558 m, dating to the Ming Dynasty. It honors the Yellow Dragon Immortal. The temple itself is modest, but its altitude alone makes it a curiosity. A local temple fair is held on the 15th of the sixth lunar month each year.

Best Time to Visit

Huanglong's appearance is highly dependent on water level and light. Visit at the wrong time and you will see dry white calcite flats instead of shimmering color.

PeriodWaterColorWeatherRating
Jun–Aug★★★★★★★★★Rainy spells, sometimes overcast★★★★
Sep–Oct★★★★★★★★★Mostly clear, autumn foliage★★★★★ (best)
Nov★★★★★★Early snow, some pools ice over★★★
Dec–May★★Cold, cable car closed, very low water★ (skip)

September–October is the golden window: the rainy season has just ended, pools are full but not turbid, and red-gold autumn foliage creates extreme contrast with blue-green water. This is also peak tourism season — avoid October 1–7 (Golden Week) when crowds are at their worst.

[图:黄龙秋季五彩池与红叶.jpg]

Light conditions matter: midday sun from 11:00–14:00 produces the most vivid pool colors (direct sunlight reflecting off the mineral deposits). Overcast or post-rain light turns the palette grey-green with lower contrast. If you catch the moment just after rain clears to sunshine — that is the most magical.

Altitude: More Serious Than Jiuzhaigou

The Five-Color Pond sits at 3,576 m and the trailhead at roughly 3,000 m. That is 500–1,000 meters higher than Jiuzhaigou (where most boardwalks are at 2,000–2,500 m, topping out around 3,100 m) — and you are walking continuously for 4–5 hours at this elevation. Altitude sickness is a real and common issue at Huanglong.

How to Minimize the Risk

  • Visit Jiuzhaigou first: If doing both, spend 1–2 days at Jiuzhaigou to acclimatize before coming to Huanglong. Flying directly from Chengdu to the airport (3,400 m) and heading straight to Huanglong is the highest-risk plan.
  • Take the cable car up: Eliminating the 500 m+ climb dramatically reduces physical strain. Walking down is far less taxing than walking up.
  • Walk slowly: Do not rush. Fast walking or taking stairs quickly at altitude is the fastest way to trigger symptoms.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink at least 200–300 ml per hour.
  • Use the oxygen stations: Supplemental oxygen points are spaced along the boardwalk (free or ¥1–2 per use). If you feel a headache or chest tightness, stop and breathe.
  • Medication: Rhodiola (红景天) supplements can be bought at local pharmacies before arrival (effectiveness varies). Acetazolamide is an option with medical consultation.

Symptoms to Watch

Mild: headache, shortness of breath, light nausea — most visitors experience this at Huanglong. Usually manageable with slower pace and oxygen. Severe (rare): intense headache, vomiting, confusion — stop all activity, use oxygen immediately, descend with a companion, and seek the on-site medical station.

Combining Huanglong with Jiuzhaigou

Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou are about 100 km apart, and nearly every traveler pairs them. Since Huanglong has no accommodation, you must return to base the same day.

Classic 3-Day Plan

  • Day 1: Chengdu → Huanglong Jiuzhai Station by high-speed train (~1h40min), or fly to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport (~1h). Check into Chuanzhusi or Jiuzhaigou entrance area.
  • Day 2: Full day at Jiuzhaigou Valley.
  • Day 3: Early departure to Huanglong (2–2.5 h drive), hike 4–5 hours, return to Jiuzhaigou entrance or airport in the afternoon; evening flight back to Chengdu.

Where to Stay

  • Chuanzhusi (川主寺): About 40 minutes from Huanglong and 1.5 hours from Jiuzhaigou. Best if doing Huanglong first.
  • Jiuzhaigou entrance area (九寨沟口): Walking distance to Jiuzhaigou entrance. Most travelers stay here, then arrange a car to Huanglong.
  • Songpan Ancient Town (松潘古城): About 40 minutes from Huanglong, with an old town worth exploring and good-value accommodation.

Transport Between Sites

  • Jiuzhaigou to Huanglong: morning bus 7:40 AM (¥47 each way), or arrange a car through your hotel.
  • Chuanzhusi to Huanglong: ~40 minutes by taxi, about ¥50–80.
  • Huanglong to airport: ~50 km, 1 hour, taxi about ¥100–150.

Practical Tips

Clothing

Even in July–August, the summit (3,600 m) can drop to 5–10°C. Bring a lightweight down or fleece jacket, a windproof shell, and sturdy walking shoes (the boardwalk is wet and slippery in places). Rain gear is essential — mountain weather changes fast.

Food and Water

Only a few vendors operate inside the park: bottled water costs ¥10, instant noodles ¥15–20. Bring your own lunch, energy bars, and at least 1 liter of water. There are a few restaurants outside the entrance, but options are limited.

Luggage Storage

The park entrance has a luggage storage facility. Do not attempt the hike with a large backpack — go light.

Cable Car Down vs. Walking Down

The downhill cable car (¥40) is a reasonable option if your knees are bad or your energy is spent. But it means skipping the lower-half sights — Bonsai Pond, Mirror Reflection Pool, and Welcome Guest Pool are only accessible on the walking trail. Unless you are feeling unwell, walking down gives the fuller experience.

Photography Tips

  • Polarizing filter (CPL): The single most useful accessory at Huanglong — it cuts surface glare and saturates pool colors dramatically.
  • Best light: 11:00–14:00 midday direct sun for the most vivid colors.
  • Wide angle for Five-Color Pond panoramas, mid-range zoom for individual pool details.
  • Phone users: Turn on HDR to prevent sky blowout.

Yes, and almost everyone does. The two are about 100 km apart. A classic plan is 3 days: 1 day for Jiuzhaigou, 1 day for Huanglong, and 1 day for travel. See the Combining section above for detailed itinerary options.

Beyond This Guide

Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou are just the headline act in western Sichuan — the region also holds Tibetan grasslands, ancient towns, and some of China's most dramatic mountain scenery. If you are mapping out a wider Sichuan route that threads together the best stops without doubling back, a tailored plan can cut transit time and avoid peak-crowd bottlenecks.
