Good to know
Full day needed — 6 to 8 hours. Safari train, walking zones, cable car, and parade add up fast.
No outside food or drinks. Bag checks at entry are strict. Sealed water bottles sometimes pass.
Metro Line 3 / 7 → Hanxi Changlong. Free shuttle bus from the station to park gates every 10–15 min.
North gate recommended for most visitors — closest to the safari train departure point.
When the safari train rolls through the African savanna zone, giraffes graze two meters from your window — heads dipping low enough that you could almost touch them. This is not a city zoo. Chimelong Safari Park (长隆野生动物世界) in Guangzhou is China's largest open-range safari experience, and ¥300 buys you a full day of exploring over 20,000 animals from ground level, inside a vehicle, and from the sky. Plan a solid six to eight hours. You'll probably wish you had more.

Most city zoos follow the same formula: you stand behind a railing while animals pace inside enclosures. Chimelong flips that on its head — in the safari zone, you're the one locked inside a vehicle while animals roam free across open grassland. It's the closest thing to an East African game drive you'll find in China.
The park gives you three ways to explore, covering ground, vehicle, and aerial perspectives:
The numbers speak for themselves: 800 hectares of parkland (roughly 1,120 football fields), over 500 species, and more than 20,000 individual animals. Chimelong is China's second-largest giant panda breeding base after Chengdu, home to the world's biggest koala colony outside Australia — over 60 at last count — and operates the planet's largest white tiger breeding program with nearly 200 white tigers.
Chimelong Safari Park is the flagship attraction of the larger Chimelong Tourist Resort (长隆旅游度假区). The resort also includes Chimelong Paradise (长隆欢乐世界, theme park), Chimelong Water Park (长隆水上乐园), and the Chimelong International Circus (长隆国际大马戏) — but this guide covers only the safari park.

Take Guangzhou Metro Line 3 or Line 7 to Hanxi Changlong Station (汉溪长隆站), exit from Gate D or E. Free shuttle buses run from the station to each park entrance every 10–15 minutes, operating from 9:00 until park closing. From central Guangzhou (Tianhe or Yuexiu districts), the ride takes about 30–45 minutes.
A taxi from central Guangzhou costs roughly ¥60–100 and takes 30–45 minutes. Use Gaode Maps (高德地图) or Didi to navigate directly to "Chimelong Safari Park North Gate" or "South Gate."
You can drive your own car through the safari zone — a unique experience that requires a separate self-drive ticket (¥300 per vehicle, 22 seats or fewer). Self-drive vehicles enter through a dedicated gate.
| Type | Regular day | Holiday / peak |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | ¥300 | ¥350 |
| Youth (12–17 years) | ¥240 | ¥280 |
| Child (1–1.5 m) / Senior (65+) | ¥210 | ¥245 |
| Under 3 years or under 1 m | Free | Free |
| Self-drive add-on (per car, ≤22 seats) | ¥300 | ¥300 |
Admission includes all walking-zone exhibits, the safari train, 4D cinema, live animal shows, and the daily float parade. Not included: self-drive entry and paid feeding experiences.
| Day | Opens | Closes | Last entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekday | 9:30 | 18:00 | 16:00 |
| Weekend / holiday | 9:30 | 18:30 | 16:00 |
Last entry is 16:00 — not closing time
The gates shut to new visitors at 4:00 PM regardless of the posted closing time. If you show up after 16:00, you will be turned away. Plan to enter by early afternoon at the latest.
Book at least one day ahead. During holidays and summer break, buy 3–5 days in advance to guarantee your spot.
The safari zone is what sets Chimelong apart — animals roam free across open grassland while you pass through their territory in a vehicle.
| Option | Cost | Duration | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Safari train | Included in ticket | ~40 min | Most visitors — easy and free |
| Self-drive | ¥300 / car (add-on) | 30–60 min | Photography, flexible pacing |
| VIP guided vehicle | ¥800+ | 1–2 hours | Small groups, feeding upgrades |
The safari train departs near the north gate. Expect 20–40 minute queues during peak hours, so head straight there when the park opens.
Self-drive vehicles enter through a dedicated gate and follow a fixed route. You can stop for photos and linger at your favorite zones, but you cannot exit the car or open the windows to feed animals. The trade-off: ¥300 is steep, and on holidays the self-drive lane gets its own traffic jams.
The train and self-drive route passes through zones modeled on different continents:
The two standout stretches: East African Savanna, where giraffes stroll past close enough to fog your window, and the African Predator Zone, where seeing a lion yawn three meters away triggers a surprisingly primal response — even with a moat between you.

The walking zone makes up most of the park's footprint and is where you'll spend the bulk of your day. Here are the areas worth prioritizing.
Chimelong is China's second-largest giant panda breeding base, just behind the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地). Twelve giant pandas live here, including park-bred cubs. In 2014, Chimelong made global headlines with the world's first surviving giant panda triplets — Mengmeng (萌萌), Shuaishuai (帅帅), and Kuku (酷酷). They're fully grown now, but Panda Paradise remains one of the park's busiest zones.
Best viewing: 9:30–11:00 AM, when the pandas are actively munching bamboo or wrestling each other. After noon they nap — and all you'll see is a black-and-white lump curled in a corner.
[图:广州长隆野生动物世界熊猫乐园大熊猫.jpg]
Over 60 koalas make this the largest colony outside Australia. Koalas sleep 18–20 hours a day, so don't expect acrobatics — but catching one awake, slowly chewing eucalyptus leaves with an expression of pure indifference, is oddly therapeutic.
Best viewing: Feeding times at roughly 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, when the koalas briefly wake up and shuffle around.

Chimelong runs the world's largest white tiger breeding program, with nearly 200 white tigers in residence. The star attraction is the white tiger diving show — white tigers leap from a high platform into a pool, launching a wall of water. Shows run roughly every 30 minutes and are consistently the park's most popular spectacle.
You'll also find Bengal tigers, golden tigers, and other rare subspecies here.

This is the park's best interactive experience. Buy a branch of leaves (¥30 weekday / ¥50 holiday) and hand-feed a giraffe. They lower their heads gently and pluck the food right from your fingers — kids lose their minds over this. Queues build fast, so come early in the morning.

A cluster of indoor-outdoor exhibits that makes an excellent midday retreat when the heat peaks:
The indoor areas have air conditioning — a genuine lifesaver when Guangzhou's summer humidity pushes past 35°C.
Primate Kingdom (猿猴王国) houses chimpanzee and orangutan families whose social drama is endlessly watchable — they bicker, groom each other, and steal snacks like reality-TV contestants. African Village features hippos, rhinos, and African elephants. Both areas attract fewer visitors than the headline zones, making them ideal for a slower, crowd-free wander.
The aerial loop takes about 30 minutes and gives you a bird's-eye view of the entire park — including the safari zone herds below. From above, you can watch giraffes drifting across the savanna and spot hippos half-submerged in their pond. The enclosed, transparent gondolas are fully safe.
Schedule the cable car for the second half of your day. After hours of ground-level viewing, the aerial perspective makes it feel like a completely different park.

| Show | Schedule | Location |
|---|---|---|
| White tiger diving | ~Every 30 min | White Tiger Mountain |
| Elephant performance | Check daily schedule | Elephant Theater |
| Parrot flight show | Check daily schedule | Green Dragon Mountain |
| 4D cinema | Every 30 min | 4D Theater |
All shows and screenings are included in your ticket — no extra charge. Pick up a printed schedule at the north or south gate when you enter, or check the park's WeChat mini-program for real-time updates. Outdoor shows may be cancelled in severe weather.
Every afternoon around 3:30 PM, animal-themed floats cruise along the walking zone's main avenue. This is the highlight of the day for young kids. Arrive 15 minutes early and stake out a spot along the route — the front row fills up fast once the music starts.
Spring (March – May): Comfortable temperatures around 20–28°C. Many animals are in breeding season, so you may spot newborn calves, cubs, and chicks. The park's landscaping is at its lushest.
Autumn (September – November): Guangzhou's most pleasant weather — less rain, fewer mosquitoes, and high animal activity. The sweet spot for a visit.
Winter (December – February): Guangzhou winters are mild (10–20°C) and most animals stay active. Crowds thin out noticeably, making this a genuinely relaxed time to visit.
Summer (June – August): Hot, humid, and packed with summer-holiday crowds (35°C+). The park sets up misting zones for cooling, and kids might actually enjoy the tropical chaos. Animals slow down hard in the midday heat.
As a major breeding center, Chimelong has newborns year-round — but spring (March – May) delivers the highest concentration: baby pandas, baby giraffes, white tiger cubs. The park announces its latest "star babies" on entrance signage and social media.

The north gate is the main entrance, closest to the safari train boarding point and Green Dragon Mountain. Recommended route:
North gate → Safari train (complete the safari zone first) → Green Dragon Mountain → White Tiger Mountain → Giraffe Plaza → Koala Garden → Panda Paradise → Cable car → Float parade (3:30 PM) → South gate exit
The logic: hit the safari zone first thing in the morning when animals are at their most active, then work your way south through the walking zones, and catch the float parade near the south gate before leaving.
On holidays, north gate queues can stretch past 30 minutes. The south gate sees far fewer visitors — start with the walking zones on the south side, then loop north for the safari train in the afternoon. The trade-off is a less natural flow through the park.

Chimelong bans all outside food and drinks. Security checks bags at the entrance and enforcement is strict. This is the most common visitor complaint, but there is no way around it.
Several fast-food restaurants and themed eateries are scattered through the park. Expect to spend ¥50–100 per person. Options include:
The strategy: eat a big breakfast before you enter, keep lunch light inside the park, and save a proper meal for after you leave.
No. Chimelong strictly prohibits outside food and drinks, with bag checks at the entrance. Sealed water bottles occasionally get through, but it's not guaranteed. Multiple restaurants and snack stalls operate inside the park.
Chimelong is one piece of a Guangzhou trip that could also take in the city's legendary food scene, Canton Tower (广州塔), Shamian Island (沙面), and day trips to Foshan or Zhuhai's Ocean Kingdom. Fitting it all together — transport timing, restaurant picks, neighborhood logistics — takes some planning.
